So we're back. I'm not ready for a detailed good-things-post yet. But just a few words.

Everything was going so well - from the very beginning - that I knew there would be a catch somewhere. Was bound to be. Nothing ever runs as smoothly as it did for us this time, and if it does, I know I'll have to pay. Many years ago, when I was a student, and I would travel somewhere, I knew everything was going to be all right when there were no trains due to some accident and I nearly missed my flight, or when I overslept I only got up an hour before the flight, etc. This time, it just went too well. We came to the airport on time and nothing happened to us on the way. We checked in pretty fast, no one tried to tell us that we could not go to Czechia or that our vac certs were wrong. The flight went great. We landed on time, managed to get the car before closing time (crazy, but yes, apparently they close at 22.00 and we landed at 21.30). We easily found our first hotel in the middle of the night. And thus it continued. Nice hotel rooms or apartments (it was cold in all of them, but each one was slightly warmer than the last one), no trouble with the car, we several times got somewhere in the last minute - without knowing it. Like, we unsuspectingly got on the last metro before it closed for the night. Or just happened to start looking up connections in the last possible minute to be on time for our PCR tests. So... you know what I mean? I was more and more suspicious. And when I felt a sharp pain in my right foot on our last night in Prague I actually was relieved. Finally. Here's the catch. The suspense is lifted. I'm paying with my foot. Again.

It was in that same city almost exactly ten years ago that I got my first foot inflammation. I had no idea what it was back then, and I had no idea what to do or not to do. So, I made it worse, much worse. And it took me all these years to learn to understand my body, and to finally get rid of the continuous pain/weird sensations in my foot and sheer inability to walk and/or stand for prolonged periods of time. And here it is back again. But I'm not scared. I've got an arsenal of possible solutions, and unbelievably, for the first time in all these years the brilliant idea to go to an orthopedic doctor who specializes in feet! Am I clever or what!

And how have you been doing?

<3 Argh, plantar fasciitis! It seems to have dreadful timing...

Only new thing here is that I'll be having a preliminary, Zoom-based interview with a Catholic uni in North Dakota within the next week or so for a tenure-track job. I'd be amazed to move beyond the first interview, but we'll see!

This whole foot+leg is very problematic, but I'm hoping I'm close to the solution.

I hope you're right and you can sort the problem soon! :)

Good luck for the interview!

Thanks! :)

Does one have to be catholic to work at one?

Not at this one, no, though I'm assuming the likelihood of them hiring my particular set of intersectional identities is rather low, so... :P

Anyhow, a tenure-track job! That would be great!

Oh yeah. I'd love a job that lasted more than a year...

My big own-goal was braining myself the day we were to drive to Phoenix before flying to Europe! I literally slammed my head, an inch or so above my eyebrows, into a rolling overhead door edge of our storage pod. I don't have a clue what I was getting out of it now. I stunned myself badly, and didn't finish my packing because of it.

As a result, I didn't have enough clothing and we had to use the ship's laundry on our river cruise, which added more than a bit to our bill, plus my wife had to do all the driving from Cloudcroft to my parent's house in Phoenix. We spent a couple of days in Phoenix, then flew Phx to Denver to Frankfurt to Berlin, then road a train to Prague, then boat back to Berlin where we flew to a horrible airport in New Jersey and back to Phoenix.

I think the next time I fly internationally again, I'm going to fly up to Seattle, drive across the border to Canada, and fly via Canada. Even as an American, flying into the USA really sucked.
