one good thing
Sep. 30th, 2018 09:18 pmEvery evening for the last two and a half years I call my grandmother. She is going to be 93 this year. It's not easy to find stuff to talk about - every evening! - so we're grateful for our little games. One is "presents". You see, my brother also calls her every evening. So, we send each other presents through grandma. How many can you come up with in 900 odd evenings? Yesterday, I sent him a false beard.
A week or so ago, I told grandma about a blogger, who had a pact with herself to write every day about one good thing that happened to her on that day. The day might be as bad as they come, bad she just had to find something good in it and share it with the world.
Now, every evening, when conversation falters, I ask: "and what is your good thing for today?" Sadly, she tries to say the same thing every evening. Wonderfully, she always finds something to say. Even when I say: "this doesn't count, you already said it yesterday and the day before". Even more wonderfully, she does sound happier after finding her "good thing for today".
I should try this, too. The good thing that happened to me today is a talk with a very dear friend - last time we spoke at least four years ago. It was kind of weird, we were both somewhat uncomfortable - we really lost touch for a long time - and we ended up telling each other all the "news". So, not really talking, but it's a beginning. I hope, we'll keep it up this time.
